Can Anyone tell me if they know of any vandalism to Dowty(Douty)
Utter’s grave at Woods Hill Cemetery in Chilo, Ohio? I mean
recently or near in the near past.
While tracing my lineage, this Memorial Day I took my two
daughters to the cemetery to show them where their 6g grand
father was buried. It looked as if a wrecking crew had attacked
the graveyard? I mean not just from weathering and age.
If this is unreported I would like to report it. Dowty’s
headstone was one seriously damaged. And strewn about. I then
had to explain to 2 small children the complex issue of why
people do this.
As I have never been faced with this before I have no idea how
to proceed.
I’m currently going to contact the Clermont County Historical
Society for advisement. But, this lack of respect for an
Underground Railroad conductor, Ohio State senator, early
pioneer of Ohio, and not to mention his lineage in the American
fabric is outrageous (i.e. Edward Douty-Mayflower, and Nicholas
Mattson Utter-New Sweden).
This being the year of the Underground Railroad Museum’s
dedication in Cincinnati a few miles away I’d hope there would
be some reaction by someone here in Clermont County.
Any suggestions?
