St. Phillips Church was expanded over this cemetery at some point in the 1800s. St. Phillips church and the cemetery are a part of Old Salem - A historical preservation organization and living history town. I have heard that the addition to the church was built on graves and that gravestones were removed and put under the church floor! Are there laws that require the restoration of cemeteries previously "built over" a hundred years ago? Shouldn't those stones be restored? I just wanted to report this to your organization so that you can ensure that the proper authorities are aware of this.
