Other Information
This cemetery has over 38,000 burials containing the remains of many
early residents of Chicago who died in the Cook County Hospital,
including a tuberculosis sanitarium and an asylum. The land was sold to
the state in 1912.The sad facts are that as late as 1989, residential
construction continued. Part of the cemetery is covered with a shopping
center and parking lot. I think it was assumed that these people would
not cause a concern because of their circumstances. Newspaper articles
indicate a memorial has been planned but to date nothing has happened.
