One of the most popular vacations within the United States is a trip through wine country. The U.S. has several very distinct wine regions, each with their own local climate and soil that affect the character of the wines. Visitors can tour the wineries, taste samples from a variety of vintages and even spend some time in the vineyards, learning how grapes are grown and harvested.
California is probably the best known wine region in the country. The breezes from the Pacific Ocean, the flinty and dry soil and the mountains that fence in the microclimate all work together to produce some of the world’s most robust and bold wines. The Napa Valley is the best known and most productive wine region in California but the region around the Temecula Valley to the south of Los Angeles is an up-and-comer. Its wines are winning international awards and its vineyards are spreading throughout the valley.
Also on the west coast, Washington State is also an important wine region and one of the fastest growing. The state lies on a similar latitude to the quintessential wine growing regions in France and Germany. The cool climate and the volcanic enriched soil produces smooth wines that have great depth of flavor and long and gentle maturations.
Farther east, Pennsylvania boasts more than 100 wineries producing a variety of wines from local grapes. Its northern location provides a perfect climate for cool-weather grapes like Vidal and Riesling but the region also produces reds like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel.
The Southeast provides a unique wine experience. The heat and humidity of a Southern summer does not bode well for European-derived grapes. However, the Scuppernong, a type of Muscadine grape, is native to the area and has been used for wine-making for centuries. It produces a sweet wine with rich and very identifiable flavors. There are several southern wineries in North and South Carolina and Georgia.
Many vacationers who visit the wine regions of the United States want to bring some of the feeling into their own homes. Adding wine décor into your kitchen is simple with the wine accessories available at The Tipsy Grape (www.tipsygrape.com). The best way to start is by having the right wine tools on hand. The Tipsy Grape offers corkscrews, wine chillers, bottle stoppers and coasters amongst other essential wine accessories.
You can augment your wine-themed kitchen with bottle racks, custom wine glasses, and other wine accents from The Tipsy Grape. For a rustic European wine look, set a wine rack on the kitchen counter with full bottles stored horizontally. Red wine can be served directly from the wine rack and white wine can be chilled for 2-4 hours before serving.
The best way to recount your wine travels is by having friends over in your home and serving them some of the wines you discovered on your trip. Your new wine tools will ensure that you serve the best wines the way they were meant to be served. And your kitchen will look like a country chateau in Provence.
