- Locate Missing Persons
Private investigators perform many functions. They can find missing persons, discover a cheating spouse, perform background investigations, and solve criminal cases. If you need something discovered, or somebody found, a private investigator might be able to help you out. They can often perform what looks to the average person like miracles using tools and methods that most people do not even know exist.
One role that private investigators play is as a reuniter. Every year, roughly 127,000 children are adopted in the United States. Every year, a new group of these adopted children find out the truth about their origins and want to know more about where they come from. Those who want to take it all the way often hire a private investigator to locate the missing biological parent. When given a name, or even just the name of the adoption agency, a private investigator can track down the birth parents (or at least the mother). The private investigator will search through old records or interview adoption agency employees to find a name. Once a name is available, the investigator treats it as a typical missing person case. Investigators have access to a host of “people-finder” databases that most people do not even know about. For a fee, these databases give access to most phone directories, and sometimes even list unlisted telephone numbers. These tools allow the investigator to find the missing parent to allow for a possible reunion between the biological parent and the adopted child.
Another role that private investigators play is as a surveillance expert. In spousal infidelity, insurance fraud, and even some missing person cases, video or audio surveillance is required to find the necessary evidence to close the case. Private investigators are masters of seeing without being seen and listening to what are believed to be private conversations. With advances in technology, investigators can take pictures from a great distance and can hide video cameras in tight places. With enough preparation, video proof can be found if it exists. Investigators are trained to hide in plain sight, which allows them to listen in and view somebody without the person realizing what is going on. In insurance fraud cases, private investigators have even been known to set a person up, causing them to walk if they are claiming a disability or getting them to lift something if they are claiming a back injury. Video evidence is collected of the fraud, and the case is settled.
Private investigators bring closure to the lives of many people. Not knowing if a spouse is cheating can be emotionally challenging. Knowing one way or another can let the person move on. Wondering where your missing biological parent is can leave a lot of questions unanswered. Finding the parent lets you answer those questions once and for all. The tools and methods a private investigator uses cannot be matched elsewhere. If you need a difficult problem solved, a private investigator is often the only person you can turn to for a reasonable solution.
